Scientists didn't discover the germ of plague until 1894. And when they did find out they were pretty shocked. Fleas bread on Rats is what caused the Black Death. When the Rats died the fleas began to nest in humans and when the plague germ got into a humans blood, that's when the humans got the infection of the plague. Lots of people held bunches of flowers and herbs to try and keep the germ away from them. Plague flea is 3,000 times larger than life. Thats why it spread so quickly across the whole of Europe.
